How Percentages Work
A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. The word comes from the Latin per centum, meaning "by the hundred." When you calculate 15% of 200, you're finding 15 parts out of every 100 — which equals 30.
The Basic Formula
The fundamental percentage formula is simple:
Result = (Number × Percentage) ÷ 100
So for 15% of 200: (200 × 15) ÷ 100 = 30.
Common Percentage Uses
- Sales tax: If sales tax is 8.5% and your purchase is $120, you pay $120 × 0.085 = $10.20 in tax.
- Tips: A 20% tip on a $45 dinner is $45 × 0.20 = $9.00.
- Discounts: A 30% discount on a $80 item saves you $80 × 0.30 = $24.
- Interest: Annual interest of 5% on $10,000 earns $500 per year.
Percentage vs. Percentage Points
