How Age Is Calculated
Age calculation is more nuanced than simply subtracting birth year from the current year. A proper age calculator accounts for whether your birthday has occurred yet in the current year, the varying lengths of months, and leap years.
Step-by-Step Breakdown
- Years: Start with the difference between the target year and birth year. If the target month/day is before the birth month/day, subtract one year.
- Months: After accounting for full years, calculate the remaining months. If the target day is before the birth day, subtract one month and carry over the remaining days from the previous month.
- Days: Count the remaining days after full years and months are accounted for.
Total Days Lived
Total days is computed by finding the difference between the two dates in milliseconds and dividing by 86,400,000 (the number of milliseconds in a day). This naturally accounts for leap years.
Next Birthday Countdown
The calculator finds your next birthday by checking whether your birthday in the current target year has already passed. If it has, it looks at the following year. The difference in days between the target date and that next birthday date gives the countdown.
