How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter your numbers into the input field, separated by commas, spaces, or line breaks (for example: 10, 20, 30, 40). 2. Click the 'Calculate' button. 3. Instantly view the average (mean), along with the sum, count, minimum, maximum, median, and range of your numbers. 4. To start over with a new set, clear the field and enter new values.

What Is an Average?

An average, also called the arithmetic mean, is the sum of all values in a dataset divided by the number of values. It is one of the most commonly used measures of central tendency in statistics, academics, finance, and everyday life.

How to Calculate the Average

The formula for the arithmetic mean is:

Average = Sum of all values ÷ Count of values

For example, to find the average of 10, 20, and 30:

  • Sum = 10 + 20 + 30 = 60
  • Count = 3
  • Average = 60 ÷ 3 = 20

Other Statistics Explained

Median

The median is the middle value when all numbers are sorted in order. If there is an even count of numbers, the median is the average of the two middle values. The median is less affected by extreme outliers than the mean.

Range

The range is the difference between the largest and smallest values in the dataset. It gives a simple measure of how spread out the values are.

Min and Max

The minimum is the smallest value in the set, and the maximum is the largest value. These help you understand the bounds of your data.

When to Use the Average

  • Calculating your GPA or grade average
  • Finding the average sale price or stock price
  • Summarizing survey or test scores
  • Tracking average daily steps, calories, or measurements
  • Comparing performance metrics over time
