How Bitcoin Profit Is Calculated
Calculating Bitcoin profit involves a few key steps that account for your entry price, exit price, amount invested, and any transaction fees charged by exchanges.
Step 1: Calculate BTC Purchased
The amount of Bitcoin you receive is determined by dividing your investment amount by the buy price:
BTC Purchased = Investment Amount ÷ Buy Price
Step 2: Account for Investment Fees
Most cryptocurrency exchanges charge a fee when you buy Bitcoin. This fee is typically a percentage of your investment amount and increases your effective cost basis:
Total Investment = Investment Amount × (1 + Investment Fee %)
Step 3: Calculate Gross Sale Value
Your gross sale value is the amount your Bitcoin would be worth at the sell price:
Gross Sale Value = BTC Purchased × Sell Price
Step 4: Subtract Exit Fees
When you sell Bitcoin, exchanges also charge a fee on the sale. Subtracting this gives your net proceeds:
Net Sale Value = Gross Sale Value × (1 − Exit Fee %)
Step 5: Calculate Profit or Loss
Your profit or loss is simply the difference between what you received and what you spent:
Profit / Loss = Net Sale Value − Total Investment
Step 6: Return on Investment (ROI)
ROI expresses your gain or loss as a percentage of your total investment:
ROI = (Profit / Loss ÷ Total Investment) × 100
Break-Even Price
The break-even price is the minimum sell price you need to recover your full investment including all fees. It is calculated as:
Break-Even Price = (Total Investment ÷ BTC Purchased) × (1 + Exit Fee %)
Why Fees Matter
Even small percentage fees can significantly impact your profitability, especially with large investment amounts. A 1% combined fee on a $10,000 investment means $100 less in your pocket before you even account for price movement. Always factor in fees when evaluating any Bitcoin trade.
Understanding ROI in Crypto
- A positive ROI means your investment grew in value.
- A negative ROI means you incurred a loss.
- An ROI of 100% means you doubled your money.
- Bitcoin has historically delivered very high ROI over long periods, but short-term volatility can lead to significant losses.
