How to Use This Calculator
1. Measure your bust around the fullest part of your chest while wearing a well-fitting bra. 2. Measure your waist at the narrowest point, typically about an inch above your belly button. 3. Measure your hips around the fullest part, usually about 8 inches below your waist. 4. Optionally, measure your high hip (4 inches below the waist) for a more detailed analysis. 5. Enter all values into the calculator and click Calculate to reveal your body shape and key ratios.
What Are the Main Body Shapes?
Body shape classification is based on the proportional relationship between your bust, waist, and hip measurements. There are five commonly recognized shapes:
- Hourglass: Bust and hips are roughly equal, with a waist significantly narrower (at least 9 inches smaller than bust and 10 inches smaller than hips).
- Pear (Triangle): Hips are noticeably wider than the bust, with a defined or smaller waist. Weight tends to be carried in the lower body.
- Inverted Triangle: Bust and shoulders are wider than the hips. This shape is common in athletic individuals with broader upper bodies.
- Rectangle (Straight): Bust, waist, and hips are close in measurement with little curvature. This is sometimes called a banana or athletic shape.
- Apple (Round): Weight is predominantly carried around the midsection, making the waist measurement equal to or larger than the hips or bust.
How Are the Ratios Calculated?
The calculator uses three key ratios to classify your body shape:
- Bust-to-Hip Ratio (BHR): Bust ÷ Hips. A ratio close to 1.0 suggests balanced proportions.
- Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR): Waist ÷ Hips. A lower WHR indicates more curvature. Health organizations often use WHR as a health risk indicator.
- Waist-to-Bust Ratio (WBR): Waist ÷ Bust. Values below 0.75 suggest a more defined waist relative to the chest.
Why Does Body Shape Matter?
Knowing your body shape helps with selecting flattering clothing silhouettes, setting realistic fitness goals, and understanding where your body stores fat. It is also used in health research — for example, apple-shaped individuals (high WHR) have been associated with higher cardiovascular risk in some studies. That said, body shape is just one dimension of health and should be considered alongside other metrics like BMI, body fat percentage, and lifestyle factors.
Health Implications of Waist-to-Hip Ratio
The World Health Organization (WHO) considers a WHR above 0.85 for women and 0.90 for men to be an indicator of abdominal obesity, which is associated with increased metabolic risk. Our calculator provides your WHR so you can compare it against these benchmarks.
