How Crypto Profit is Calculated

Calculating cryptocurrency profit involves more than just comparing buy and sell prices. Exchange fees can significantly reduce your net gains, especially for frequent traders. Here's the breakdown of each component:

Total Investment Cost

Your total investment cost is the amount you spent buying the crypto, including the exchange buy fee:

  • Gross Investment = Buy Price × Quantity
  • Buy Fee Amount = Gross Investment × (Buy Fee % / 100)
  • Total Investment Cost = Gross Investment + Buy Fee Amount

Total Sale Revenue

Your total revenue from the sale, after deducting the sell fee:

  • Gross Revenue = Sell Price × Quantity
  • Sell Fee Amount = Gross Revenue × (Sell Fee % / 100)
  • Net Revenue = Gross Revenue − Sell Fee Amount

Net Profit or Loss

Net profit is the actual money you made or lost after accounting for all costs:

  • Net Profit / Loss = Net Revenue − Total Investment Cost

A positive result means you made a profit; a negative result indicates a loss.

Return on Investment (ROI)

ROI expresses your profit or loss as a percentage of your original investment:

  • ROI = (Net Profit / Total Investment Cost) × 100

A 50% ROI means you earned 50 cents for every dollar invested. ROI is a critical metric for comparing the performance of different trades or assets.

Why Fees Matter

Even small fees compound over many trades. A 0.5% buy fee and 0.5% sell fee on a $10,000 investment means $100 in fees alone. Active traders should always factor in fees when evaluating profitability.
