How Cumulative GPA Is Calculated
Cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all your grades across every semester you have attended. It accounts for the number of credit hours each course carries, giving more weight to higher-credit courses.
The Formula
The standard formula for cumulative GPA is:
- Quality Points = GPA × Credit Hours
- Total Quality Points = (Previous GPA × Previous Credits) + (New Semester GPA × New Semester Credits)
- Cumulative GPA = Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours
Example Calculation
Suppose you have a 3.20 GPA with 60 credit hours completed, and this semester you earned a 3.50 GPA across 15 credit hours:
- Previous quality points: 3.20 × 60 = 192
- New quality points: 3.50 × 15 = 52.5
- Total quality points: 192 + 52.5 = 244.5
- Total credits: 60 + 15 = 75
- Cumulative GPA: 244.5 ÷ 75 = 3.26
Why Quality Points Matter
Quality points ensure that a strong performance in a 4-credit course impacts your GPA more than the same grade in a 1-credit seminar. This is why taking heavy credit loads with strong grades is the fastest way to raise a cumulative GPA.
GPA Scales Explained
Most universities in the United States use a 4.0 scale, where an A equals 4.0 quality points per credit hour. Some high schools or institutions use a 5.0 scale (often to reward AP or honors courses) or even a 10.0 scale common in certain international systems. Always verify which scale your institution uses before interpreting your GPA.
