Deck Board Calculator – Estimate Boards, Cost & Materials

Our free deck board calculator helps you quickly estimate how many deck boards you need for your project, along with total linear footage and material cost. Simply enter your deck dimensions, board size, gap spacing, and waste factor to get an accurate count in seconds. Whether you're building a small backyard deck or a large multi-level structure, this tool saves you time and prevents costly over- or under-ordering.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the length and width of your deck in feet. 2. Select the board width (nominal size) you plan to use — 2x6 and 5/4x6 boards are the most common for residential decking. 3. Choose the length of the boards available at your supplier (e.g., 12 ft or 16 ft). 4. Set the gap size between boards — 1/4 inch is the standard recommendation for drainage and wood expansion. 5. Adjust the waste/trim factor slider; use 10% for a straight layout or 15%+ for diagonal or herringbone patterns. 6. Optionally enter the price per board to calculate your estimated material cost. 7. View your results instantly — total boards needed, linear feet, board feet, and total cost.

How the Deck Board Calculator Works

This calculator uses your deck's dimensions and board specifications to determine how many boards you need to cover the entire surface, accounting for gaps between boards and a waste factor for cuts and defects.

Deck Area

The total deck area is simply the length multiplied by the width:

Deck Area (sq ft) = Deck Length × Deck Width

Effective Board Width

Each board occupies its actual face width plus the spacing gap. This is converted from inches to feet:

Effective Board Width (ft) = (Actual Board Width + Gap Size) ÷ 12

Number of Board Runs

The number of parallel board rows (runs) needed across the deck width is:

Board Runs = Deck Width ÷ Effective Board Width (ft)

Boards Per Run

If the deck is longer than a single board, multiple boards must be spliced end-to-end in each run:

Boards Per Run = ⌈ Deck Length ÷ Board Length ⌉

Total Boards with Waste

The base number of boards is multiplied by the waste factor to account for cuts, damaged boards, and future repairs:

Boards Needed = ⌈ (Board Runs × Boards Per Run) × (1 + Waste%) ⌉

Waste Factor Guidelines

  • 5–10% — Straight, perpendicular layout with minimal cuts
  • 10–15% — Standard recommendation for most projects
  • 15–20% — Diagonal (45°) pattern with more end cuts
  • 20–25% — Herringbone or complex picture-frame patterns

Linear Feet & Board Feet

Total linear feet equals the number of boards multiplied by the individual board length. Board feet (a volume measurement) is calculated as:

Board Feet = (Thickness in × Width in × Length ft) ÷ 12

Common Deck Board Sizes

  • 2×6 — Most popular; actual size 1.5 in × 5.5 in. Strong and long-lasting.
  • 5/4×6 — Slightly thinner than 2×6; actual size 1 in × 5.5 in. Lighter and less expensive.
  • 2×4 — Narrower boards; actual size 1.5 in × 3.5 in. Requires more boards but gives a refined look.
