How to Use This Calculator
1. Enter the total linear footage (perimeter) of the area you want to fence. 2. Select your desired fence height from the dropdown. 3. Choose the fence type that matches your project — wood picket, chain link, vinyl, or split rail. 4. Select the spacing between fence posts (typically 8 feet). 5. Enter the number of gates you need and the cost per gate. 6. Input your local labor cost per linear foot if you plan to hire a contractor. 7. Click Calculate to instantly see the number of posts, rails, pickets, material cost, labor cost, and total project estimate.
How the Fence Calculator Works
This calculator uses your fence dimensions and material preferences to estimate the key components of your fencing project. Here's a breakdown of each calculation:
Number of Posts
Posts are spaced evenly along the fence line. The formula is:
- Number of Posts = ⌈Total Length ÷ Post Spacing⌉ + 1
- The extra post accounts for the terminal post at the end of the fence run.
Number of Rails
Rails run horizontally between posts and provide structural support. The number of rails per section depends on fence height:
- Up to 4 ft: 2 rails per section
- 5–6 ft: 3 rails per section
- 7–8 ft: 4 rails per section
- Chain link uses a single top rail for structure.
Number of Pickets or Panels
For wood pickets, the calculator assumes standard 6-inch (0.5 ft) wide pickets. For chain link and split rail, panel counts are estimated per 10 ft section. Vinyl fences typically come in pre-assembled panels.
Material Cost
Material costs per linear foot vary by fence type and height:
- Wood: ~$10–$16/ft depending on height
- Chain Link: ~$8–$12/ft
- Vinyl: ~$18–$26/ft
- Split Rail: ~$6/ft
Labor Cost
Labor is calculated by multiplying the total linear footage by your entered cost per linear foot. National averages range from $5–$20 per foot depending on terrain and fence complexity.
Total Cost
Total Cost = Material Cost + Labor Cost + (Number of Gates × Cost Per Gate)
