How to Use This Calculator
1. Enter your current overall grade in the 'Current Grade' field as a percentage (e.g., 78 for 78%). 2. Input the weight your final exam carries in the course — for example, if the final is worth 30% of your grade, enter 30. 3. Type in the desired course grade you want to finish with. 4. Optionally select the grading scale that matches your school or professor's policy. 5. The calculator will instantly show the score you need on your final, your current and desired letter grades, a feasibility assessment, and the best possible course grade you could achieve.
How the Final Grade Calculator Works
The final grade calculator uses a straightforward weighted-average formula to determine the minimum score required on your final exam to reach your target course grade.
The Formula
The core formula is:
- Required Final Score = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight
Where all values are expressed as percentages (0–100). For example, if your current grade is 78%, the final is worth 30% of your grade, and you want an 85%, the calculation is:
- Required Score = (85 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 30.4 ÷ 0.30 ≈ 101.33%
In this case, a score above 100% would be needed, meaning the goal may not be achievable without extra credit.
Understanding the Weighted Average
Your course grade is a weighted average of all your scores. Before the final, your existing work accounts for (1 − Final Weight) of the total grade. The final exam accounts for the remaining Final Weight. The formula simply solves for the unknown final exam score that makes the weighted average equal to your desired grade.
Letter Grade Scales
Different instructors and institutions use different grading scales. The three common scales supported by this calculator are:
- Standard: A starts at 90%, B at 80%, C at 70%, D at 60%.
- Strict: A starts at 93%, B at 83%, C at 73%, D at 63%.
- Lenient: A starts at 88%, B at 78%, C at 68%, D at 58%.
Always verify the grading scale with your syllabus to get the most accurate letter grade estimate.
Best Possible Course Grade
The calculator also shows the highest course grade you could achieve if you scored a perfect 100% on the final. This helps you understand your realistic ceiling and set appropriate expectations.
