How to Use This Calculator
1. Enter the length and width of your room in feet. If your room is not a perfect rectangle, break it into sections and calculate each separately, then add the results. 2. Select the type of flooring you plan to install from the dropdown menu. 3. Enter the material cost per square foot — you can find this on product packaging or retailer websites. 4. Adjust the waste/overage percentage slider. A standard 10% is recommended for straight layouts; use 15% or more for diagonal tile or complex patterns. 5. Optionally, enter the installation/labor cost per square foot if you're hiring a contractor. 6. Enter the number of rooms if they are all the same size. 7. Click Calculate to instantly see your required square footage, number of boxes to buy, and total estimated cost.
How the Flooring Calculator Works
The flooring calculator uses simple geometry and cost formulas to give you a reliable estimate for your flooring project. Here's a breakdown of the math behind each result.
Step 1: Calculate Base Room Area
The base area of a rectangular room is calculated by multiplying its length by its width:
Room Area (sq ft) = Length × Width
For multiple identical rooms, multiply this result by the number of rooms.
Step 2: Add Waste Factor
It is critical to order more flooring than your exact measurement to account for cuts, breakage, and future repairs. The formula is:
Area with Waste = Total Area × (1 + Waste% / 100)
- 10% – Standard for straight, simple layouts (hardwood, laminate, vinyl).
- 15% – Recommended for diagonal or offset tile patterns.
- 20–30% – For intricate herringbone or complex mosaic patterns.
Step 3: Calculate Material Cost
Once you have the total area with waste, multiply by the price per square foot of your chosen material:
Material Cost = Area with Waste × Price per Sq Ft
Step 4: Add Installation Cost
If you're hiring a professional, labor is typically charged per square foot. Add the installation cost per square foot multiplied by the total area:
Installation Cost = Area with Waste × Labor Cost per Sq Ft
Step 5: Total Project Cost
Total Cost = Material Cost + Installation Cost
Estimating Boxes or Packs
Flooring products are sold by the box or pack, each covering a set number of square feet (typically 15–25 sq ft). Our calculator assumes a standard coverage of 20 sq ft per box, so:
Boxes Needed = ⌈ Area with Waste ÷ 20 ⌉ (rounded up to the nearest whole box)
Always check the actual coverage on the packaging of the product you purchase and adjust accordingly.
Average Flooring Costs by Type
- Hardwood: $3–$12 per sq ft (materials); $3–$8 per sq ft (installation)
- Laminate: $1–$5 per sq ft (materials); $2–$4 per sq ft (installation)
- Tile: $1–$20 per sq ft (materials); $4–$14 per sq ft (installation)
- Vinyl / LVP: $2–$7 per sq ft (materials); $2–$5 per sq ft (installation)
- Carpet: $2–$8 per sq ft (materials); $1–$4 per sq ft (installation)
