How GPA Is Calculated

GPA, or Grade Point Average, is a standardized way of measuring academic achievement. It is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted. Most U.S. colleges and universities use a 4.0 scale.

The GPA Formula

The formula for calculating GPA is:

  • Grade Points = Letter Grade Value × Course Credit Hours
  • GPA = Sum of All Grade Points ÷ Sum of All Credit Hours

For example, if you earn an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course, your GPA would be: (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) / (3+4) = (12 + 12) / 7 = 24/7 ≈ 3.43.

Grade Point Scale

The standard 4.0 grade point scale used in our calculator is:

  • A+ / A = 4.0
  • A- = 3.7
  • B+ = 3.3
  • B = 3.0
  • B- = 2.7
  • C+ = 2.3
  • C = 2.0
  • C- = 1.7
  • D+ = 1.3
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0.0

Cumulative GPA

Your cumulative GPA is the weighted average of all courses taken throughout your academic career. To calculate it, you combine your previous grade points (previous GPA × previous credits) with your current semester grade points, then divide by total credits.

What Is a Good GPA?

A GPA of 3.0 or above is generally considered good at most institutions. Many graduate schools and competitive employers look for a 3.5 or higher. Academic honors such as Dean's List typically require a 3.5–3.7 GPA, while Latin honors like Summa Cum Laude usually require a 3.9 or above.
