How the Grade Calculator Works
This grade calculator uses a weighted average formula to compute your final grade. Each assignment or category is assigned a weight that reflects how much it contributes to the overall course grade. The formula is:
Final Grade = Σ (Score × Weight) / Σ Weight
For example, if your Homework is worth 20%, your Midterm is worth 30%, and your Final Exam is worth 40%, the total weight is 90%. Each score is multiplied by its weight, summed, then divided by the total weight to produce a normalized percentage.
Understanding Weighted Grades
Many courses use a weighted grading system where different components carry different levels of importance. A final exam worth 40% has four times the impact of a quiz worth 10%. Understanding this allows students to strategically focus their effort on high-weight components.
Grading Scales
- Standard Scale: A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69%, F = below 60%
- Strict Scale: A = 93–100%, B = 83–92%, C = 73–82%, D = 63–72%, F = below 63%
- Lenient Scale: A = 85–100%, B = 75–84%, C = 65–74%, D = 55–64%, F = below 55%
GPA Conversion
The calculator also converts your final percentage grade to a 4.0 GPA scale using standard letter grade equivalents: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Note that many institutions use plus/minus grading (e.g., A- = 3.7), so consult your school's specific policy for a precise GPA calculation.
