Ideal Weight Calculator – Find Your Healthy Target Weight

The ideal weight calculator estimates your healthy target weight based on your height, gender, age, and body frame size using four widely recognized medical formulas. Unlike a single number, our calculator presents results from the Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi formulas so you can see the full picture. Understanding your ideal weight range can serve as a helpful benchmark alongside other health metrics like BMI and body fat percentage.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Select your gender (Male or Female) using the radio buttons at the top. 2. Choose your preferred height unit — Imperial (feet and inches) or Metric (centimeters). 3. Enter your height in the corresponding fields. 4. Input your age in years (the calculator is designed for adults 18+). 5. Select your body frame size — Small, Medium, or Large — based on your wrist circumference relative to your fingers. 6. Click Calculate to instantly see your ideal weight from four different formulas, an averaged result adjusted for frame size, and your healthy BMI weight range.

How Ideal Weight Is Calculated

There is no single universally accepted definition of "ideal weight." Researchers and clinicians have developed multiple formulas over the decades, each derived from different population studies. Our calculator uses four of the most established formulas:

1. Robinson Formula (1983)

For men: 52 kg + 1.9 kg per inch over 5 feet.
For women: 49 kg + 1.7 kg per inch over 5 feet.

2. Miller Formula (1983)

For men: 56.2 kg + 1.41 kg per inch over 5 feet.
For women: 53.1 kg + 1.36 kg per inch over 5 feet.

3. Devine Formula (1974)

Originally developed for pharmaceutical dosing:
For men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.
For women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.

4. Hamwi Formula (1964)

One of the oldest formulas, used clinically for decades:
For men: 48 kg + 2.7 kg per inch over 5 feet.
For women: 45.5 kg + 2.2 kg per inch over 5 feet.

Frame Size Adjustment

Body frame size accounts for differences in bone density and skeletal structure. Our calculator applies a ±10% adjustment to the average ideal weight:

  • Small frame: Average × 0.90 (reduce by 10%)
  • Medium frame: No adjustment (× 1.00)
  • Large frame: Average × 1.10 (increase by 10%)

To estimate your frame size, wrap the thumb and middle finger of one hand around the opposite wrist. If they overlap, you have a small frame; if they just touch, medium; if there is a gap, large.

Healthy BMI Weight Range

The World Health Organization defines a healthy BMI as 18.5–24.9. Using your height, we also calculate the corresponding weight range:
Weight = BMI × height² (in meters)

A weight between these two bounds is generally considered healthy, though BMI does not account for muscle mass, age, or body composition.

Limitations

  • These formulas were derived primarily from Western adult populations and may not be universally applicable.
  • They do not account for muscle mass, body fat distribution, or chronic conditions.
  • Ideal weight is only one indicator of health — consult a healthcare provider for personalized guidance.
