How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the length and width of the area you plan to mulch in feet. If your area is irregular, break it into rectangular sections and add the results together. 2. Select your desired mulch depth from the dropdown — 3 inches is the standard recommendation for most landscapes. 3. Choose the bag size that matches the bags sold at your local garden center or home improvement store. 4. Optionally enter the price per cubic yard (for bulk delivery) and/or the price per bag to get a cost estimate. 5. Your results will instantly display the total cubic feet, cubic yards, number of bags required, and estimated costs for both bulk and bagged mulch.

How the Mulch Calculator Works

The mulch calculator uses a straightforward volumetric formula to determine the amount of mulch needed to cover a rectangular area at a given depth.

The Core Formula

The basic calculation is:

  • Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)
  • Depth (ft) = Depth (inches) ÷ 12
  • Volume (cu yd) = Volume (cu ft) ÷ 27

Since there are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard, dividing the cubic footage by 27 converts the result to cubic yards — the standard unit used for bulk mulch orders.

Calculating Bags Needed

To find the number of bags required, divide the total cubic footage by the volume of each bag, then round up to the nearest whole bag:

  • Bags Needed = ⌈ Volume (cu ft) ÷ Bag Size (cu ft) ⌉

Always round up so you don't run short. Most retailers allow returns on unopened bags.

Recommended Mulch Depths

  • 1–2 inches: Light topdressing or refreshing existing mulch layers.
  • 3 inches: Standard application for most garden beds — balances moisture retention, weed suppression, and aesthetics.
  • 4 inches: Maximum recommended depth for aggressive weed suppression.
  • Avoid exceeding 4 inches around plant stems and tree trunks, as excessive mulch can promote rot and disease.

Bulk vs. Bagged Mulch

For larger projects (over 3–4 cubic yards), bulk mulch delivered by the truckload is almost always more cost-effective than bagged mulch. Bagged mulch is convenient for small areas, easy transport, and precise quantities. Use the cost comparison in our calculator to see which option saves you more money for your specific project.

Tips for Mulching Success

  • Clear the area of weeds before applying mulch for best weed suppression results.
  • Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks to prevent rot.
  • Apply mulch in spring or fall for maximum benefit to plant roots.
  • Rake existing mulch before adding a new layer to prevent matting and oxygen deprivation.
