Ovulation Calculator – Find Your Most Fertile Days

The ovulation calculator helps you identify your most fertile days based on your menstrual cycle, making it easier to plan or prevent pregnancy. By entering your last period date and average cycle length, you can estimate your ovulation date and the 6-day fertile window surrounding it. Understanding your cycle empowers you with actionable insights about your reproductive health.

Enter the date when your last period started (format: YYYY-MM-DD).

How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the first day of your last menstrual period in the YYYY-MM-DD format (for example, 2026-05-01). 2. Input your average cycle length in days — if you are unsure, 28 days is the most common average. 3. Optionally adjust the luteal phase length; the default of 14 days works for most women. 4. Click Calculate to instantly see your estimated ovulation date, your 6-day fertile window, your peak fertility day, and when your next period is expected. 5. Use the 'Days Until Ovulation' result to plan accordingly, and repeat each month using your new last period date for the most accurate results.

How Ovulation Is Calculated

Ovulation — the release of an egg from the ovary — typically occurs a set number of days before the next menstrual period, not a set number of days after the last one. This interval is called the luteal phase and is usually between 12 and 16 days, with 14 days being the most common.

The Core Formula

The estimated ovulation date is determined by subtracting the luteal phase length from the total cycle length, then counting forward from the first day of the last period:

  • Ovulation Day of Cycle = Cycle Length − Luteal Phase Length
  • Ovulation Date = Last Period Date + Ovulation Day of Cycle

For a standard 28-day cycle with a 14-day luteal phase, ovulation occurs on day 14 of the cycle.

Understanding the Fertile Window

Sperm can survive inside the female reproductive tract for up to 5 days, while an egg remains viable for only 12–24 hours after ovulation. This creates a fertile window of approximately 6 days:

  • Days 1–5 before ovulation (due to sperm survival)
  • The day of ovulation itself
  • The day after ovulation (egg viability)

The highest probability of conception occurs in the two days just before and on the day of ovulation — this is your peak fertility period.

Cycle Length Variations

Not all cycles are 28 days. A normal menstrual cycle can range from 21 to 35 days. Shorter cycles mean earlier ovulation; longer cycles mean later ovulation. Tracking your period over several months gives a more accurate average cycle length to use in the calculator.

Factors That Affect Ovulation Timing

  • Stress and major lifestyle changes
  • Illness or significant weight change
  • Hormonal conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders
  • Breastfeeding and postpartum cycles
  • Coming off hormonal contraception

Ovulation Signs to Watch For

Beyond calculation, your body produces physical cues around ovulation that you can track to confirm timing:

  • Cervical mucus becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy (resembling raw egg whites)
  • Basal body temperature (BBT) rises slightly (0.2–0.5°C) after ovulation
  • Mild pelvic pain (mittelschmerz) on one side of the abdomen
  • Increased libido is common around the fertile window
  • LH surge detectable 24–36 hours before ovulation via OPK strips
