How to Use This Calculator

How the Paver Calculator Works

The calculator uses the dimensions of your project area and individual pavers to determine how many units you need. It accounts for joint spacing and adds an overage percentage to cover cuts, breakage, and future repairs.

Step 1: Calculate Total Area

The total project area is simply:

Area = Length × Width

For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, calculate each section separately, and add the results together before entering a combined figure.

Step 2: Coverage per Paver

Each paver occupies a slightly larger footprint when accounting for the joint gap:

Effective Paver Length = Paver Length + Joint Width
Effective Paver Width = Paver Width + Joint Width
Coverage = (Effective Length × Effective Width) in sq ft

Step 3: Base Paver Count + Waste

Divide the total area by the coverage per paver, then multiply by the waste factor:

Pavers Needed = ⌈(Total Area / Coverage) × (1 + Waste%/100)⌉

Always round up to the nearest whole paver.

Step 4: Sand Base Volume

A compacted sand bedding layer is required beneath the pavers. The volume is:

Sand Volume (cu ft) = Total Area × (Sand Depth / 12)
Sand Volume (cu yd) = Sand Volume (cu ft) / 27

Most suppliers sell sand by the cubic yard, so the calculator provides both units for convenience.

Choosing the Right Waste Factor

  • 5% – Simple, straight-edged rectangular areas with minimal cutting.
  • 10% – Standard recommendation for most residential projects.
  • 15% – Areas with curves, angles, or diagonal patterns requiring extra cuts.
  • 20% – Complex designs, herringbone patterns, or irregularly shaped spaces.

Sand Base Best Practices

  • Use coarse, washed concrete sand (ASTM C33) for the bedding layer.
  • A 1-inch compacted sand layer is standard for patios and walkways.
  • For driveways subject to vehicle traffic, increase the base depth and use a compacted gravel sub-base beneath the sand.
  • Screed the sand perfectly level before laying pavers to ensure a flat finished surface.
