Roofing Calculator – Estimate Shingles, Materials & Cost

Our roofing calculator helps homeowners and contractors quickly estimate the number of shingles, roofing squares, and total project cost for any roof size and pitch. Simply enter your roof dimensions, pitch, and local material prices to get an accurate material and labor estimate in seconds. Whether you're planning a full re-roof or a new build, this tool takes the guesswork out of your roofing project.

Measure the length of your roof at the base (eave to eave).

ft

Measure from the ridge to the eave on one side of the roof.

ft

A standard gable roof has 2 faces. Hip roofs typically have 4.

Pitch is expressed as rise:12. A 4/12 pitch is common for residential roofs.

Add extra material for cuts, waste, and overlaps. 10% is standard; complex roofs may need 15–20%.

One roofing square = 100 sq ft. Average 3-tab shingles cost $80–$120 per square.

$

Felt or synthetic underlayment is typically $10–$25 per square.

$

Labor averages $100–$200 per square depending on region and complexity.

How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the length and width of your roof at the base (in feet). 2. Select the number of roof faces — 2 for a standard gable roof, 4 for a hip roof. 3. Choose your roof pitch from the dropdown (rise per 12 inches of run). 4. Select a waste factor based on your roof's complexity — 10% for simple roofs, up to 25% for complex designs. 5. Optionally enter your local costs for shingles, underlayment, and labor per roofing square. 6. Click Calculate to instantly see your total roof area, squares needed, bundle count, and full cost breakdown.

How the Roofing Calculator Works

This calculator uses your roof's footprint dimensions and pitch to determine the true sloped surface area, then factors in waste to give you an accurate material order quantity.

Step 1: Calculate Flat Footprint Area

The flat (horizontal) area is calculated as: Length × Width × Number of Faces. For a 40 ft × 20 ft gable roof (2 faces), that's 40 × 20 × 2 = 1,600 sq ft.

Step 2: Apply the Pitch Multiplier

A sloped roof covers more surface area than its flat footprint. The pitch multiplier is calculated using the Pythagorean theorem:

  • Pitch Multiplier = √(1 + (Rise/12)²)
  • A 4/12 pitch gives a multiplier of √(1 + (4/12)²) ≈ 1.054
  • A 12/12 pitch gives a multiplier of √2 ≈ 1.414

The sloped area = Flat Area × Pitch Multiplier.

Step 3: Add Waste Factor

Materials are always wasted at edges, valleys, hips, and ridges. The industry standard is 10% for simple gable roofs, 15% for moderately complex roofs, and 20–25% for hip roofs or those with many features like skylights and dormers.

Step 4: Convert to Roofing Squares

Roofing materials are sold in squares — one square covers 100 square feet. Divide your total adjusted area by 100 to get the number of squares needed.

Step 5: Calculate Bundles

Standard 3-tab or architectural shingles come in bundles of about 33 sq ft each, meaning 3 bundles = 1 square. Multiply squares by 3 to get the bundle count.

Understanding Roofing Costs

Roofing costs are typically broken into three components:

  • Shingles: $80–$200 per square depending on material (3-tab, architectural, metal)
  • Underlayment: $10–$25 per square for felt or synthetic wrap
  • Labor: $100–$250 per square depending on region, pitch, and complexity

Always get at least three contractor quotes for your specific project, as local labor rates vary significantly.
