How to Use This Calculator
1. Select what you want to calculate: Pace, Finish Time, or Distance. 2. Enter your distance by typing a value and choosing the unit (km, miles, or a preset race distance like 5K or marathon). 3. If calculating Pace, enter your total run time in hours, minutes, and seconds. 4. If calculating Finish Time or Distance, enter your known pace in minutes and seconds per km or per mile. 5. Click Calculate to instantly see your pace, finish time, distance, and speed in both km/h and mph.
How Running Pace is Calculated
Running pace is the time it takes to cover one unit of distance — typically one kilometer or one mile. It is expressed as minutes and seconds per km (min/km) or per mile (min/mi). The core relationship between pace, distance, and time is:
- Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance
- Finish Time = Pace × Distance
- Distance = Total Time ÷ Pace
Pace vs. Speed
Pace and speed are inverse measures of the same concept. Speed is expressed in km/h or mph (distance per unit time), while pace is expressed in min/km or min/mi (time per unit distance). To convert between them:
- Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km)
- Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ Speed (km/h)
Common Race Distances
The calculator supports standard race distances used worldwide:
- 5K – 5 kilometers (3.107 miles)
- 10K – 10 kilometers (6.214 miles)
- Half Marathon – 21.0975 kilometers (13.109 miles)
- Marathon – 42.195 kilometers (26.219 miles)
Pace Conversion Between km and Miles
To convert a pace from min/km to min/mile, multiply the pace in seconds by 1.60934. To convert from min/mile to min/km, divide by 1.60934. For example, a pace of 5:00 min/km equals approximately 8:03 min/mile.
Training Applications
Understanding your running pace is fundamental for structured training. Runners use specific pace zones — such as easy pace, tempo pace, and race pace — to guide different types of workouts and build aerobic fitness progressively without over-training.
