How Semester Grades Are Calculated
Most courses use a weighted average system, where different components of the course contribute different percentages to your final grade. The formula is:
Semester Grade = Σ (Score × Weight) / Total Weight
Example Calculation
- Assignments: 85% score × 30% weight = 25.5 points
- Quizzes: 78% score × 20% weight = 15.6 points
- Midterm: 80% score × 25% weight = 20.0 points
- Final Exam: 88% score × 25% weight = 22.0 points
Total weighted points = 83.1 out of 100 → Semester Grade: 83.10% (B)
Grading Scales Explained
Standard Scale
The most common scale in US schools: A (90–100), B (80–89), C (70–79), D (60–69), F (below 60).
Plus/Minus Scale
A more granular scale used by many universities that awards A-, B+, B-, etc. This scale affects GPA calculations more precisely.
Strict Scale
Some professors use a stricter scale where an A requires 95% or above, making grades harder to achieve.
Understanding GPA Points
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated on a 4.0 scale. An A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, and F = 0.0. With plus/minus grading, intermediate values like 3.3 (B+) and 3.7 (A-) are used.
Tips to Improve Your Semester Grade
- Focus on high-weight components like finals and midterms first.
- Missing assignments can disproportionately lower your grade if they carry high weight.
- Talk to your professor early if you are borderline between grades.
- Use this calculator to determine the minimum score you need on remaining work to achieve your target grade.
