How Test Grades Are Calculated
A test grade is determined by dividing the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiplying by 100 to get a percentage. The formula is:
Score (%) = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100
Letter Grade Scales
Once the percentage is calculated, it is mapped to a letter grade. Different schools and instructors use different grading scales. Our calculator supports three common scales:
- Standard Scale: A = 90–100%, B = 80–89%, C = 70–79%, D = 60–69%, F = below 60%
- Strict Scale: A = 93–100%, B = 85–92%, C = 75–84%, D = 65–74%, F = below 65%
- Lenient Scale: A = 85–100%, B = 75–84%, C = 65–74%, D = 55–64%, F = below 55%
Understanding Your Results
The calculator also shows you how many additional correct answers would have been required to reach the next letter grade. This helps students understand how close they were to a better grade and set goals for future tests.
Example Calculation
If a test has 40 questions and you got 6 wrong, you answered 34 correctly. Your score would be (34 ÷ 40) × 100 = 85%. On a Standard scale, that earns you a B.
