How to Use This Calculator

1. Enter the length and width of the area you want to tile in feet. 2. Enter the dimensions of a single tile in inches (check the tile box or product listing). 3. Select a waste factor based on your layout complexity — 10% is recommended for most standard projects. 4. Optionally, enter the price per tile to see the estimated material cost. 5. Click Calculate to see the total number of tiles needed and your cost estimate.

How the Tile Calculator Works

This calculator uses simple area math to determine how many tiles are required to cover a given space, with an added buffer for waste.

Step 1: Calculate Room Area

The total area of the room or surface is calculated by multiplying its length by its width:

  • Room Area (sq ft) = Room Length (ft) × Room Width (ft)

Step 2: Calculate Tile Area

Tile dimensions are typically given in inches, so we first convert them to feet before calculating tile area:

  • Tile Area (sq ft) = (Tile Length ÷ 12) × (Tile Width ÷ 12)

Step 3: Base Tile Count

Divide the room area by the area of one tile and round up to the nearest whole number:

  • Base Tiles Needed = ⌈ Room Area ÷ Tile Area ⌉

Step 4: Apply Waste Factor

Always purchase extra tiles to account for cuts, breakage, and future replacements. The waste factor is a percentage added to the base count:

  • Total Tiles Needed = ⌈ Base Tiles × (1 + Waste Factor) ⌉

Step 5: Estimate Cost

If a per-tile price is provided, the total estimated material cost is:

  • Estimated Cost = Total Tiles Needed × Price Per Tile

Choosing the Right Waste Factor

The waste factor you choose should reflect the complexity of your tile layout:

  • 5% – Simple grid layout in a rectangular room with few cuts needed.
  • 10% – The standard recommendation for most projects.
  • 15% – Diagonal or herringbone patterns require more cuts and waste more material.
  • 20% – Irregular room shapes, lots of obstacles (toilets, cabinets), or large-format tiles.
