Weighted GPA Calculator – Calculate Your Weighted Grade Point Average
The weighted GPA calculator helps students accurately compute their grade point average by accounting for the difficulty level of each course. Unlike an unweighted GPA, a weighted GPA gives extra points to honors, AP, and IB courses, reflecting the additional challenge they represent. Use this free tool to instantly see both your weighted and unweighted GPA side by side.

How to Use This Calculator
1. Enter the grade you received in Course 1 by selecting it from the dropdown menu. 2. Enter the number of credit hours for that course. 3. Select the course type — Regular, Honors, or AP/IB — to apply the appropriate weight bonus. 4. Repeat steps 1–3 for each additional course (up to 6 courses supported). 5. Leave any unused course rows set to 'N/A' and 0 credits. 6. Your weighted GPA, unweighted GPA, total credit hours, and total courses counted will be displayed automatically in the results section.
How Weighted GPA Is Calculated
A weighted GPA is calculated by assigning extra grade points to more rigorous courses such as Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), or International Baccalaureate (IB) classes. The formula multiplies each course's weighted grade points by its credit hours, sums everything up, and divides by the total credit hours.
The Weighted GPA Formula
Weighted GPA = Σ (Weighted Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ Credit Hours
Where the weighted grade points are the standard grade points (e.g., A = 4.0) plus a difficulty bonus:
- Regular courses: No bonus added (e.g., A = 4.0)
- Honors courses: +0.5 bonus added (e.g., A = 4.5)
- AP / IB courses: +1.0 bonus added (e.g., A = 5.0)
Standard Grade Point Scale
The following grade-to-point conversions are used on the standard 4.0 scale before any weight bonus is applied:
- A+ / A = 4.0
- A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3
- B = 3.0
- B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3
- C = 2.0
- C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3
- D = 1.0
- F = 0.0
Weighted vs. Unweighted GPA
An unweighted GPA treats all courses equally on a 4.0 scale regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA can exceed 4.0 when a student earns high grades in honors or AP/IB courses. Most high schools report both values, and many colleges consider the weighted GPA when evaluating applicants' academic rigor.
Example Calculation
Suppose a student takes three courses:
- AP Biology — A (4.0 + 1.0 = 5.0) — 4 credits
- Honors English — B+ (3.3 + 0.5 = 3.8) — 3 credits
- Regular Math — A- (3.7 + 0.0 = 3.7) — 3 credits
Weighted GPA = (5.0×4 + 3.8×3 + 3.7×3) / (4+3+3) = (20 + 11.4 + 11.1) / 10 = 42.5 / 10 = 4.25
