How the Word Counter Works
This tool analyzes raw text input using a series of pattern-matching rules to extract meaningful statistics about your writing. Each metric is calculated independently using reliable, widely-accepted methods.
Word Count
Words are identified by splitting the text on whitespace characters (spaces, tabs, and newlines) and filtering out any empty tokens. This means hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word, consistent with most style guides.
Character Count
The character count includes every character in your text, including spaces, punctuation, and special characters. The "Characters (No Spaces)" count strips all whitespace before counting, which is commonly required by platforms like Twitter or academic submission systems.
Sentence Count
Sentences are detected by splitting the text on common sentence-ending punctuation: periods (.), exclamation marks (!), and question marks (?). Consecutive punctuation is treated as a single sentence boundary.
Paragraph Count
Paragraphs are counted by splitting the text on one or more consecutive newline characters. Each block of text separated by a blank line is treated as a distinct paragraph.
Reading & Speaking Time
Estimated reading time is calculated at an average adult reading speed of 238 words per minute, based on research published in the journal Reading and Writing. Estimated speaking time uses an average speaking pace of 130 words per minute, suitable for presentations and narration.
Average Words per Sentence
This metric divides the total word count by the total sentence count. A score between 15–20 words per sentence is generally considered clear and readable for most audiences.
- Below 10: Very short, punchy sentences — great for marketing copy.
- 10–20: Ideal range for most web content and articles.
- 20–30: Academic or technical writing range.
- Above 30: May be difficult to read; consider breaking up sentences.
